Lake Lachuá, located in the middle of the national park of the same name in Guatemala, is a perfectly circular lake in a cenote. Cacao Verapaz has partnered with two small local Mayan groups working to protect the surrounding forest threatened by industrial palm oil production. The plantation of cocoa and cardamom trees around the lake provides a buffer zone that protects the shoreline soils. Cocoa beans from this region demonstrate aromas of lemon, strawberry jam and toasted nuts.
